Overview

Adding custom background music to Mario Kart Wii is one of the most popular uses of BRSTM files. This guide covers all major methods — from USB Loader GX to CTGP Revolution to Dolphin Emulator.

What You'll Need

Method 1: USB Loader GX (Recommended)

Step 1: Prepare Your Files

Convert your MP3/WAV files to BRSTM format using the BGM Box converter. Set appropriate loop points for seamless playback.

Step 2: Find the Game ID

Mario Kart Wii's game ID is RMCE01 (NTSC-U), RMCP01 (PAL), or RMCJ01 (NTSC-J).

Step 3: Place BRSTM Files

On your SD card or USB drive, create the directory structure:

SD:/usbloader/music/RMCE01/
  strm_00.brstm (title screen)
  strm_C0.brstm (menu music)
  strm_XX.brstm (race tracks)

Step 4: Enable in USB Loader GX

In USB Loader GX settings, go to Loader Settings → Custom BGM and set the path to usbloader/music/.

Method 2: CTGP Revolution

Place BRSTM files in SD:/CTGP/MyStuff/. CTGP detects them automatically. Use filename format slot_X.brstm where X is the music slot number.

Method 3: Dolphin Emulator

Place BRSTM files in Dolphin/User/Load/RMCE01/ and enable custom music in Dolphin's audio settings.
